Introduction
These steps configure Thunderbird so that you can access your email from outside the UCAR security perimeter without the use of VPN.- Launch Thunderbird email
- Go to Tools/Account settings
- Highlight Server settings and change:
- the server to securemail.acd.ucar.edu
- the port to 993
- the security settings to SSL
- the Use secure authentication box to be unchecked

- Highlight Outgoing Server (SSL), highlight the outgoing server and and click Edit/b>
- Enter "ndir.ucar.edu" as the Server Name
- Leave the Port set to "25"
- Under "Security and Authentication", click Use name and password
- Under "Use secure connection" select TLS
- Click OK and then on Inbox to check for new email.
Authenticate as always with your CIT username and password. For this first time, you
may have to accept a security certificate. If so, click "Accept this
certificate permanently".
- Try to send an outbound email. For this first time, you may have to accept a security certificate. To authenticate, you'll need your UCAS username and password
Which Password again?
- When prompted for "securemail" use your CIT username/password (inbound email)
- When prompted for "ndir.ucar.edu" use your UCAS username/password (oubound email)
Summary
1. Set Incoming Mail Server to:
securemail.acd.ucar.edu
2. Select SSL based authentication (port 993)
3. Check mail and Accept Certificate when prompted
4. Authenticate with CIT/Windows username/password
Using NCAR'S TLS Enabled SMTP Server to Send Mail When Outside the Firewall:
1. Set Outgoing Mail Server to:
ndir.ucar.edu
2. Select TLS based authentication (Port 25)
3. Send mail and Accept Certificate when prompted
4. Authenticate with UCAS/Timecard/Gatekeeper username/password
