PROCEDURE FOR ADDING A NEW HIRE
(Please check off tasks if they have been completed or are not necessary)
1. Make sure that user has filled out account application.
Please enter the user's name here:
2. Add user to the WEQC:
- Check database to see if user exists already (if he/she does then move onto step three -- if username is already taken then choose some other variation of their name)
- Add user to the database - be sure to write down Scientist #
2.5 Add user to the UCAS system:
- Add add them to gatekeeper/UCAS via the WEQC
3. Set up account on ACD
- Execute "add_user.sh" shell script on ACD as root to add user (this will also add them to acdonly mailing list and set up all directories on ACD)
4. Add user to CIT Windows Domain/Active Directory
- Run Active Directory Users and Computers
- Navigate to where the account goes -- e.g., cit.ucar.edu\Divisions\ACD\Users
- Right click on "Users" and select "New" then "User"
- Enter information here
- The entry under "Users" will be the full name. To shorten to the login name just click into the new user's name field and rename.
- Right click and select "Properties"
- On the Account tab select "Password never expires"
- On the Profile tab under "Connect" select Z:\ and connect to \\acdnt\home\username
- VNC to acdnt.acd.ucar.edu
- Create public/private folders and set permissions
5. Add user to individual Unix systems
- For Linux systems the text based useradd is perhaps the easiest interface to use:
sudo useradd -u sci# -g group -G supplimental_groups -f -1 -c "first_name last_name" -d /home_directory -s /bin/ksh username
- You only need to set the password on laptops as desktop systems will use kerberos and the CIT domain.
- Enter the names of the systems which the user was given an account on:
6. Email user to let them know the status of his account
- This email should include such things as username, systems for which he/she has a password, policies on systems (soft quota's, preferred shells, etc) and email address information (both acd and ucar accounts. If they do not have an email address listed then contact Donna or Marilena for a means to contact them).
7. Email Donna and Marilena to let them know about the new account (if not already 'CC'ed in the previous step)
- Send email to
dlee@ucar.edu
and
stone@ucar.edu
informing them of the new user.
8. Make sure that user's UCAS password is active (if applicable)
8.5. Request Cryptocard (if applicable)
9. Please enter any other known information such as office location, system requirements (if not fufilled by step 5) and arrival dates
10. Once all of these steps are completed, remove the request from the queue
