HP Color Laser Printer
Revised March 2, 2007
"acdcolor2" is a queue which actually prints to 2 printers in ML494. These printers are HP Color Laserjet 4600 printers. Jobs that are sent to the acdcolor2 queue will alternate between the printers. The acdcolor2 print queue is a valuable resource for the division at large. It is only available for color output of UCAR-related material.
Rules of use
- The ACD Systems group provides all transparencies, toner cartridges and other consumables for this printer. If you purchase transparencies to have in case we run out, you must purchase HP C2934A Transparencies specifically made for this model of printer. Under no circumstaces should materials other than plain white paper or HP C2934A transparenices be fed through this printer. The printer can be damaged beyond repair by the use of non-approved media.
- acdcolor2 is for UCAR-use only. Use for non UCAR/NCAR business is not allowed, and such printouts should be made elsewhere. These are not acceptable uses: printing non-scientific web pages, advertisements for non-UCAR parties, Christmas letters, documentation for PC computer games, etc.
- acdcolor2 is for use where color output is necessary. In some cases, color output is optional in which case, that output should be submitted to one of our black and white laser printers. Examples are Word documents that contain a logo in color, software documentation, etc. Printing in color is expensive at about $0.25 a page for the division, and we would like color output to be used primarily for scientific graphics.
- acdcolor2 is not for mass production. If you have many copies of a document, the initial copy can be printed on acdcolor2 off of which color copies should be made elsewhere.
- Do not set your default printer to "acdcolor2" at any time.
- The printer does not handle all types of output. We use filters to try to prevent most of the "thousand pages of garbage" type conditions, but sometimes a job will make it to the printer that for some reason will get stuck in the queue, preventing other jobs from printing. There are no filters to prevent this from happening 100% of the time. If this happens, let the Systems Staff know so that the queues can be cleared and restarted.
- Transparencies are loaded through the lowermost tray only. Do not put media other than white paper stock in the paper trays that load from the front of the printer. Do not put any media other than transparencies in the lowermost tray.
- The printer has a more frequent downtime than our other print queues. Plan your project well ahead of time so that you aren't having to print right before a presentation (in case the printer is down).
- Alternatives to acdcolor2 include HP color inkjet printers or personal or group-owned color laser printers. The Systems Staff can set up your own ethernet-connected printer along with Unix and Microsoft Windows print queues to print to that printer. The printer and it's network attachment must be purchased by your project. Check with your Systems Administrator to find out the latest model and any compatibility concerns.
