Information for new Staff and Visitors: Bringing a Computer

May I bring my own computer?
If you are a visitor, you are welcome to bring a computer. We provide a wireless (802.11b) network to which you may connect a laptop computer. The SSID is "UCAR". The network requires authentication. Point your browser to http://wireless.ucar.edu and from there authenticate with either your UCAS username and password, or a guest account username and password assigned to you by your Administrative Assistant.

For access to our printers and other resources, you may need to be connected to our Internal network. Because of security, such connections are only allowed if:

  • The notebook computer is running Mac OS 10.4 or Windows XP Professional (English language version)
  • The computer is running Antivirus software with current updates
  • The computer has the latest Mac OS or Windows XP updates applied
  • The computer is free of high-risk software such as peer-to-peer applications.
Our policy is that such a computer may be granted access for up to 30-days. Beyond 30 days, we require that the computer be switched over to our administrative control -- joined to our Windows domain if it is a PC, or updated with our administrative applications if it is a Mac. Administrative control also involves the creation of accounts for ACD Systems Administrators and limiting some privileges (for example, requiring Cryptocard for some operations).

Computers which are running any form of Unix except for MacOS must use the UCAR/ACD wireless network. Or optionally we can install our version of Fedora Linux on the machine and bring it under our administrative control.

Please let us know in advance if you intend to bring a computer. Also note that we don't typically stock power adapters -- there are just too many models of computer out there, and it is risky to use a power adapter other than the one that the manufacturer delivered with the computer.
